I know and visit an 89 year old that lives outside of Loches every year. It's farm country, basically in the middle of nowhere. On a back road. He drives a car, goes shopping, visits friends, and a couple of times a week goes to lunch.
I know your philosophy is that he should walk the dozen kilometers to do his errands, or take a bike, but unfortunately he does waste petrol getting around with his car. (And it's expensive!)
Maybe you'll realize someday that getting old beats the alternative.
