I tend to drink white sparkling on a day to day basis. Got about 100 bottles in cellar ranging from £5 to £100 I guess. Champagne, range of French, Prosseco even the odd cava.
Taste varies enormously. I find that bottles within one brand also seem to vary more than some other wines. Some cheaper champagnes can be a bit rough- I would rather have a better (and usually cheaper) alternative fizz. I don't think at a cheaper pricing point most people notice if it is champagne or fizzy wine if they don't see the bottle (there are of course exceptions).
We had some passable English sparkling wine at Christmas.
As a child I remember going to ackermans and being fascinated by the injuries the staff had from the exploding bottles (showing injuries seemed to be a key part of the tour).
