To be clear, I am neither endorsing the actions of these folks on a moral basis nor suggesting it is likely in fact that if their claims are successful they will give away any money won. My comment on "more pragmatically, they could donate it to charity" was intended to mean that launching a negligence action with the sought remedy of only $1 seems to my untrained eye likely to run into a lot of difficulty.

I invite anyone with specific knowledge of the US civil procedures to comment on my assertion.
