I think it very much in their interest to defend the claim! They would not want a court to find them negligent.

For genuine claims for expenditure related to this incident, I don't see why anyone needs to go to court - putting a genuine claim to BA should be all that is needed. If they don't pay that (which I strongly doubt), then a small claims court case would be all that is needed.
