I believe about 2% of people i have ever served champagne to in a bar have ordered the drink because they enjoy drinking it over other drinks. The 98% are purely poseurs and those celebrating. I would say 2% of champagne drinkers know anything about champagne or could tell a bad one from a good one.
I aso look at global sales figures.
If your experience of Champagne drinkers is limited to customers of "high end" bars then your sample is inherently skewed. Such establishments are surely the haunts of poseurs and celebrants.
