AAdvantage Gold flying on an award ticket in a few days. Traveling companion is flying on a paid ticket on a separate PNR, and she has no status.

Any experiences with free same-day standby for the companion in this situation? I know the rules say same reservation, but I've gotten upgrades for a companion before on a separate PNR. Never tried same-day standby, though.

Flying out of DCA.

I know there's no hard-and-fast rule. Just looking for experiences.
