I don't actually own a car in my (very car-centric) home city, but usually rent when I travel. It depends what I'm trying to do. I wouldn't rent a car if I was just going around Manhattan for a day - but seeing a lot of different places in a spread out area across multiple cities in a short period of time - in just about every country, it's easier to have a car.
