The OP is at least partially right that it's also due to cultural conditioning. For instance, I once met a visitor from Germany who was astonished that employees were driving ~5 miles down the road between the satellite and main offices of their company, and that there was no bus. The employees replied this is not NYC. The visitor still didn't seem to understand, as if expecting there would be a bus line on every major road, even in the suburbs.
