If you're booking within the DM window (6 days out after 6:00 PM Eastern or so) best thing to do is search ExpertFlyer for upgrade inventory or the Delta website for flights that say "Upgrade Available". Then you can see which flights will confirm an upgrade instantly...

For example, if I was booking today for flights this coming Friday and returning Monday, I can see that LAX-RDU non-stop still has 4 seats available for immediate upgrade, and that routing via DTW does too, while routing via ATL does not, and the same holds true for the return. Meanwhile, SNA and ONT both look quite bleak.

So from this, it anecdotally seems the non-stop is pretty light on elites, and ATL-LAX or flying to ONT/SNA would be a much riskier bet, but it all depends on the loads the particular day you travel. If you're booking that close in, just use the data that's available to you at that time.
