I've found availability poor lately, but suddenly opens up really close to the day of travel, sometimes on the day itself.

This is fine if you can book at very short notice and happy to change your plans if it turns out the destination you want is not available. Not quite as useful for those who need to book time off work, arrange hotels on advance purchase rates, etc.
