Yup. The report will take some time, but as NTSB learns they will make interim releases and if they find safety-related defects they will issue recommendations to change them (FAA will issue AD notes, or whatever is necessary), as they have done previously.
The process may appear ponderous, but it has resulted in significant safety improvements throughout the entire system. Are we there yet? No, but we are getting closer.

Given the amount of money on the line, everyone involved is best served by the NTSB following its typical, very methodical investigation process to the end. For a major event, the report process will include public review hearings before the final report is adopted.
What I as a passenger will be looking for is the recommendations to minimize the risk of a repeat event. If some aircraft system came into play, perhaps safety directives will be issued. The airline may need to change some of its procedures. Those directives could be issued before the report is finally adopted.
