Even winds aloft can make a marked difference - not very long ago I flew LAX-NRT and we flew parallel to the coast as far as northern Oregon before swinging westward. Fantastic views of the northern California coast from the starboard / right side of the aircraft (of which I got some nice photos) at a comparatively low altitude.
Arriving, even from ICN or NR, you may wind up going as far east as Sacramento before you double back for the (eventually final) approach to SFO.
