This is my exact scenario too. I typically end up around 40k-50k miles per year - either barely Gold, or Silver with a large rollover.

I've become pretty fed up with the Skymiles program, so I'm going for Gold one last time this year. I'll enjoy my 100% mileage bonus next year, then 2015 I will start flying whomever is cheapest. I'll keep the AmEx for the companion ticket and free checked bag, but I have no reason to continue staying loyal beyond that.
