It sounds like the hotel misunderstood your question. As long as they let her check in, there's no issue getting a room. If however, you want credit or elite benefits for the room, some locations will insist that you show up at the front desk before they are released, which is how they control it.
What are the terms of the credit card offer? If they are non transferable then that may be an issue and the certificate may be void if you don't show up.
Since apparently your wife and her Girl Friend will be showing up, they probably don't actually believe you have any intention of showing up, that it's a girls weekend or whatever.
Not sure what you are expecting here other than to call the hotel and ask them what their policy is, as you have done and they have told you. Without knowing the terms of the certificate, and the hotel involved, all everybody here can do is guess or relate a story that may or may not apply.
