I've concluded that the Star Alliance upgrade award is a mostly illusory benefit, given that it's:

a. limited to very expensive tickets,
b. limited to one segment per award,
c. subject to strict capacity controls
d. impossible to waitlist
e. nearly as costly (in miles) as a business class award ticket

I'm curious whether anyone's actual experience has led them to a different conclusion.
