Actually, it is in the Merchant Agreement between the CC company and store that they are required to examine the signature, and they are not supposed to take one that is unsigned. It is a fraud prevention measure.
Yeah, I know, the clerks are not trained handwriting analysts that can tell if the signatures match, but that is the reason they ask.
