Would you be happier if they just got rid of any upgrades so that this isn't an issue? A hotel relies on the additional revenue to pay for extras such as free laundry. Reminds me of a hotel in Dubai that includes free airport transfers with a suite, when I get upgraded to a suite I don't expect the airport transfers, I am just glad I got a great suite.
If it ends up costing the hotel too much they either will upgrade fewer people to suites or remove the amenity altogether, even for those that paid for a suite.
The OP got their answer when they first called, 15% discount. They pushed it and found an employee that had wrong info. The hotel probably should own up to their error and give it free, but there will be repercussions either to the employee or -potentially- in the long run to how generous the hotel is with upgrades, as they have no obligation to upgrade diamonds to a suite.
I am with JDiver on this, I would be elated with the $100's of daily benefit I got from the upgrade and not get so stuck on $50, especially after I agreed to the $50.
