No airline says, "because you got a free upgrade, you will have to pay for the meal". Why should hotels be different?
Well, actually, it isn't different. I've been upgraded at the gate and on board told that I would get what was leftover for the meal since I was an upgrade. Didn't have to pay but ended up w/some cheese dish no one else wanted.
