If they HAVE to have the stoller, then they have to wait, I can tell you that the ground crew wont huff it to get just the stroller to the family as many other passenagers will have a tight connection as well.

So either wait for the stroller

If they wait, the longest I have waited for gate checked items is 6 minutes off a CRJ-900 at SLC... They have a nice system set up for the gate check bags.
