Now, I am getting mostly this situation: insert chip - error. Then swipe - error (says insert chip). Contactless - no response. The correct algorithm now: try contactless - it will not work, will tell you insert or swipe. Then, insert and it will ask for pin and will work this way.
Using Amex has been and is remaining a major PITA in Canada. I am only keeping it for points.
Its its a real problem, just ask for a Emergency replacement card (Say you damaged your card) and you will have a swipe card for 3 months, then just ask for another one. The emergency replacement cards are swipe only.
Bizarrely, I'm currently on business in Toronto and my UK Amex chip card seems to work fine. At one restaurant the waiter said the chip won't work with Amex and was surprised when it did.
