I have to say that what you were told on the phone seems to be untrue. I booked a reward seat on MH in Y for a KUL-SIN flight on 10 March 2013 (booked on 5 March). Cost was 4500 avios and £46.50. Booked it on ba.com and was all fine - no error messages and no need to call BAEC.
