Hi all,
Longtime lurker here with a hypothetical question: the next time you fly into LAX, would you rent a Tesla Model S for $199 per day?
I ask because I'm a huge fan of the Model S, but its price is quite steep: $83K with taxes, more than I would normally spend. But with peer-to-peer car rental services (e.g.,
Getaround and
RelayRides) becoming common, I could offset some of the cost by sharing the Tesla with more people, for when I'm not using it.
So I'm trying to gauge demand for such a service. It would include pick-up at the airport in the Model S, a Chargepoint card to refuel the car for free, a smartphone that conveys vehicle information, insurance, taxes, 100 miles per day, as well as drop-off at the airport when you're done.
The only Model S rental I found is from MPG Rentals for $599.75/day. A Mercedes GL450 from Hertz booked a month in advance, with AAA CDP, is $202.86/day. But a Tesla is a bit pricier and more "exotic" than the Merc, and Hertz is located off-terminal. The Model S received the highest-ever score from Consumer Reports, and won Car of the Year from a couple of magazines.

Given this choice to drive a Model S for $199/day, would you take it? If you already live in L.A., would you borrow one by the hour for, say, a special occasion? Would love to know your thoughts to see if this could be a possibility.
Regards,
Michael
