If it was using the same flight number as a previous flight, then it can easily happen, as they go by flight number, AFAIK, not segment. For example, if the same flight number goes LEX-ORD-MBS on the same day, then the LEX people can checkin first, and at 6 hours before your flight, very well could be over 50.
