I meant to comment on this one a while back. I was flying XXX-ORD-MBS. Checked in at XXX about 6 hours before the ORD-MBS flight. On a 50-seat CRJ, I was sequence #53. Not sure how that happened. (The ORD-MBS was never even booked to 50, and went out with a half-dozen empty seats).

If it was using the same flight number as a previous flight, then it can easily happen, as they go by flight number, AFAIK, not segment. For example, if the same flight number goes LEX-ORD-MBS on the same day, then the LEX people can checkin first, and at 6 hours before your flight, very well could be over 50.
