These seats are usually available at booking and have likely been selected by other passengers.

If you want the window, go with a middle and window or a window/aisle, but know the middle seat could very well be occupied.

There are generally no tricks to getting EC for free - if you want to sit there, I'd just pay for it. At check in, and if upgrades clear of Medallion passengers, other seats may open up closer to check in.
