YYZ-GRU is traditionally bad for upgrading. Also, GRU is not exactly a nice airport to hang out or to take a quick city tour. You'll arrive in the morning and leave at night - painfully slow day. You could grab a day hotel, of course.
LHR is a better stop to kill a day. Good day hotels there.
Beware of SAA's tired A340s.
There is nothing wrong with SAA's hard or soft product. I was on an A330 an A340-300 and an A340-600 and all had hard product which was just as good if not better than AC. Wife liked the J seats better than AC. And my info is recent... I literally got off a SA A340 earlier today.
There is one A340 that apparently get subbed in which isnt upgraded. You can check out a couple of threads over in the African forum on the topic.
I went LHR out and FRA back. Connecting is easier in FRA. More to do in LHR. It is just an ugly ugly flight.
