But that was not what he was asking, he wants new cards to get to HI so I would suggest getting Hawaiian airlines card from BOA and usair card from barclaycard and AA card from citi, wait a couple of months and get another flavor citi AA card if you can. Chase wont give you another for a while but you can get 1 from the 3 banks I listed above and they all rack up AA points...Hawaiian just partnered with them and has a low min spend $1000 i think (sorry but i got it just before they pulled it from the hawaiian airlines website, it was 35k, don't know what it is now) the usaircard gives 35K with first purchase and the 50K citi AA card if you can find a link that still offers 50k is 3k spend...anyway that would give you 120k in AA and they have seasonal awards to Hawaii for a discount and a normal priced pair of tickets up front is 140k....so if you get a second citi AA card and the usair merger goes through you will have plenty....if the merger slows down you can always try for a 3rd citi card (amex, visa and mastercard AA cards) or try for a business card.
both discover and freedom have 5x on gas starting in July.

The %10 off was a good idea though.

You are right the method I outlined would be to maximize rewards without a new card. I am more conservative and to me 2000 is boarder line to get a new card
