It's widely accepted however, just like the US, there are merchants who don't accept it.
Most restaurants, and all the better ones, movie theatres, gas stations, some grocery stores (not Loblaw owned), big box stores, malls, etc will accept Amex. The challenge is often with smaller, independent businesses who often don't accept Amex and even when they do, gripe about doing so due to high fees.
