Unless you are an elite (which it sounds like your GF is probably not), you get little from any airline in terms of WX (as they are not obligated). Heck 1Ks (for a time) got nothing (hotels, vouchers, etc) for WX issues .

Combined with UA being more "stingy" with compensation, i'm not surprised this happened.
