Girlfriend called at work "We're booting you from flight, your new flight is 28hrs.."

United called my girlfriend at work, just as she was leaving work to head to the airport (approx 3:30P) and told her she had been booted from her flight. They offered no compensation, only the offer to refund her original ticket price or rebook her on a flight tomorrow night that also has a layover (previous was a direct, domestic). She's in DC, flying out of DCA.

She is supposed to attend a wedding with me tomorrow. Now she's not the savviest when it comes to asking for things, but doesn't this seem a little ridiculous? A straight refund? I feel like at the very least Delta or American would have offered a pretty sizable voucher for the troubles, and put her on another airline if they had to.

Any advice on how to deal with this? You guys are pros. Thanks.
