I was upgraded into first, overbooking it!

Has this ever happened to you? Two seats in F available at check-in. Upon check-in, I get upgraded into F but am not given a seat. When I go back to look for a seat, there are none! I see that the upgraded list shows two additional people, with seats. I am not on the upgraded list nor on the pending upgrade list. My coach seat is now vacant.

I called and asked about this and they were just as perplexed. Supervisor was also puzzled. I was told I just had to wait it out and hope someone vacates an F seat, then I can take it. My fear is that no seat gets released and then I get downgraded to the middle seat on the last row! I lost my exit row seat! Its a 757 with 24 F seats, so hopefully one opens up but its a friday afternoon before the holiday week.

I have an EF seat alert running to tell me as soon as a seat opens up. Any thing else I can do? How will they determine who gets downgraded if they remain overbooked? I suspect the last one in, the guy without a seat Any typical downgrade compensation?
