To SamCat, I would keep insisting that they MAKE award space available even though none is available, whether it be on AA, BA, or a non-OW carrier. They screwed up and need to fix it. ^ for catching their screw up in advance. The old FT mantra of call, click, call back again until you get a satisfactory resolution works most of the time.
I tried to get AA to open a second J saver award ticket on a wide open flight. First two agents said there is nothing they could do. Third agent said, let me put in a request. The next day, I got the second seat.
I'm on the phone. sigh....
