1 Exactly, UMA calls deduct from your bucket of Tmobile minutes. No extra LD charges.
2 It has nothing to do with the cell network in that country, only the wifi access. I have not used UMA in Japan and others may want to chime in.
Even better, when overseas I turn on Tmobile's unlimited international Blackberry service and forward all calls unconditionally to my google voice number which (sometimes comically) transcribes the voicemail and sends it to email.
