I will be doing some flying on Cathay as I have to do a YYZ-HKG-LHR-YYZ trip in Sep and I am wondering if I should start trying to get status on Cathay. How many miles do I need on Cathay to make this worthwhile?

I will also be returning to Asia at least once more this year in Nov so if I have one HKG-LHR leg plus a return YYZ-HKG and maybe a PEK-HKG flight.
If you get the Amex card, you can get yourself Gold with zero effort on Cathay.

You can upgrade with miles and they tend to oversell their flights.

I guess it depends on what you would want with another program. Upgrading with Cathay is done with miles...if you are flying paid J, not much of an issue there
