According to your OP, you have to go from T1 to T4. You can't get to the T4 corridors until you take the Airtrain to get there. I suppose you could take a taxi but I've never done that.
Why wouldn't you want to drop your bag off at T1 after you clear customs? If you take them with you to T4 and then check in your luggage, you'll only be adding extra time.
