This is sometimes the case, but as far as I can tell, it's not an absolute, and you have to just try the website and see what you can get as echino says. As per your example, many of the Asian flights are bookable in LAX and SFO, some with after midnight less than 4 hour connection but also some after midnight and greater than 4 hour connection. But I have a hard time getting the reverse to book, from SE Asia to the US, if anything after midnight is involved in the routing.

This is true. One of the weaknesses of LM. But as many of us have found, there are some good points as well.
