I'd go ahead make a min payment for the statement you just got.
Same here, never had to pay the min first. However the rewards never come when the statement prints either, usually a day or two after (occasionally even longer), giving people the opportunity to pay the minimum first and perhaps perpetuate the notion that it was actually required
