The reason simple, but might sound strange: the two separate tickets together were cheaper than the original MDW-SNA would have been.
For some reason as I checked, it was true for all SNA-MDW or MDW-SNA flights: if the stop/connection was DEN, than separate tickets were cheaper. (by $20 - $30 )

I am wondering for the reason. Sale price for the DEN tickets, but not, if you only connect in DEN? I do not remember seeing similar before this sale.
