If you are on a flexi ticket, then I would simply keep checking the award availability for your wife's ticket upto and after your arrival at LHR.
This is only worth attempting in the absence of any checked baggage, however (or short check the bag, collect the bag and try).
To me, it's not worth the effort to try at LHR.
