As for trying to move to an earlier flight at the airport, I haven't had any luck doing that in a non-flexible ticket such that I wouldn't even bother trying any more. If it's convenient for BA, such that the flight you're on is over-booked and you want to move to an earlier one, then perhaps there's a small chance, but I don't know how likely it is.
