The reality is that many of us who routinely travel and stay in hotels have grown accustomed to asking for upgrades when they are not automatically bestowed upon us. There is nothing wrong with asking and in hotel parlance it is a common occurrence. It really has nothing to do with whether or not Hilton values you as a Gold, sometimes the property just doesn't upgrade freely unless they are asked.
Also on weekends, holidays, and/or low demand periods, the person responsible for assigning upgrades may not be working. Many hotels have a specific person who designates room assignments and upgrades and this can range anywhere from a manager to the Rooms Controller to the night auditor to the morning shift workers. If for any reason (sudden illness, weekend, holiday, day off, etc) that person is not working, room upgrades may not get assigned before arrival thus it does not hurt to ask for one.
