For me, the Tube is more convenient, and therefore faster, than the Heathrow Express. But I've had a 50% failure rate on the few times I have used the Heathrow Express - which is pretty well why I stopped even considering it, except for when the Tube is down.

I suppose the moral is to check before you travel if departing London.
