I don’t understand that US Airways can sell this flight as a Direct flight when it most definitely is not a direct flight...
If we did not care about the stopovers we could have saved at least 400$ per ticket by flying over New York, Detroit or Atlanta... But because we had only one stop in Frankfurt we decided to take this flight... We are bit disappointed, but we will try to get the best of it.

Unfortunately this is fairly common practice for at least US carriers. On the flip side as far as customs is concerned I would take CLT over any other mentioned airports.
Understand your disappointment but this practice has been around for many many years and many know about it and unfortunate few like yourself get caught in it
