Question Traffic offences committed by additional driver, who pays the fines?

I travelled with a group of university coursemates and we rented a car though avis in Italy and drove it across Italy, Swiss and Germany. At the time of rental I was the main driver and there was 1 additional driver who also drove the car. However the additional driver did not really obey the speed limits in Italy and Swiss and I have good reasons to believe that he committed a number of traffic offences as I personal witnessed a number of flashes went off as he passed though the speed cameras. Although the rest of us have urged him to drive within the speed limit but it was not very helpful and did not change his behavour very much.

So here my question comes. if we got caught by Italian and Swiss authorities to be overspeeding who should be responsible for paying the speeding tickets? I contacted Avis regarding this matter and they informed me that since I was the main driver therefore any fines would be put onto my credit card and I need to contact relevant authorities (Italian and Swiss Police) if there is any dispute regarding who was actually driving the vehicle.

Personally I have never committed a single traffic offence and always obey local traffic rules and regulations, I really would not want to pay for someone else´s mistakes. I would be truly grateful if anyone with relevant knowledge or experience could share your thoughts and help me out.

By the way I am living in the UK and held a full UK driving license.
