besides the zip-tie and only packing clothes in checked bags that you're willing to 'sacrifice', i steer away from the better name brands like B&R for checked luggage. never underestimate the street-smarts & savvy of thieves & looters at the airport to catch on and spot out the quality stuff. for similar reasons, i also favor using duffel bags for checked luggage since they tend to be a slightly less popular luggage choice for upscale travelers which are exactly the sort whom looters hope to steal from.

in the end, no matter what strategy you use...IMO it's still largely the luck of the draw. my sister travels frequently for business in the EU and she nevers locks her luggage and hasn't had anything stolen. go figure.

personally, i try to pack a minimum amount for checked luggage and I try to avoid checking luggage altogether, whenever possible. it's very liberating and less stressful when you keep it to a minimum.
