Thanks everyone... my only hesitation with going through a department store tailor is that they're working on an hourly wage or by contract with the store and don't rely on return customers, word-of-mouth or reputation, so I'm always wary about bringing any clothing to these guys. I'm not sure if BB has an in-house tailoring service or if they outsource to someone, but if so, I'd prefer to go to that person directly. While the alteration is very basic (letting out fabric at waist) I still prefer to go with someone who ideally does more than just basic alterations and might take work from department stores like Brooks, but is not an in-house tailor for them. Those guys are generally trained to do the most basic hem jobs and stitch pockets, etc. but don't really understand clothing and suit construction like someone who works from scratch or also does bespoke services. I don't need some high end master tailor to let out my trousers of course, but with a hard to find '60s deadstock poplin pincord that's really sentimental to me, I also don't want to take any risks ny just throwing it to a department store because they don't really care one way or the other. If they were to get ruined or turn out poorly for any reason, it'd be my liability and neither Brooks Brothers nor the tailor who did the alterations would lose much sleep over it. My old tailor in Montreal who did contract work for Holt Renfrew and Harry Rosen once told me to steer clear of the in-house store tailors for this very reason; they're nothing more than salary men with basic training. I'll see what the concierge can do for me... perhaps he'll have more pull to get this done.
