My advice would be to tell him that when he gets to "his" gate, it would be a wise move to look at the giant board with the destination on it, to be sure he is at the correct spot.
Explain that DL puts the giant sign there, specifically so that passengers such as himself can look at the giant sign and ensure they are at the right gate.
Further, explain that his missed flight, unfortunately, falls squarely on his shoulders, as failure to look at the giant sign can only be construed as negligence by him.
This will help him to avoid mishaps such as this in the future...
