Last time I asked at LGW if they'd change my J class connecting domestic flight they were happy to do so free of charge.

It was a domestic add on to a cheap (I class) business fare. They said that as the domestic was in J class they could change it.

So it might be worth going to the airport ticket office early if they want to try and fly earlier.
