First of all thanks so much for all your prompt opinions as well as comments on this topic^!

Already at the time of booking, I had followed oliver2002's suggestion and had my dad waitlisted for "I", although "I" is still (as of today) available on the booked flights. Until now, the WL has not cleared...

This is really disappointing and I agree with the comments that LH seems to (again) be really deceiving it's most loyal customers. I still do not get it...why can I book an award flight in C but at the same time not upgrade a paid ticket into the same booking class?

I will now escalate this topic within LH. After millions of miles on LH I am really tired of having to fight for almost every of LH's "favors".
