I’d be interested to hear how you know the J cabin is filled by staff on ID90 tickets. There could be any number of reasons that the cabin fills after you’ve viewed the seat map. Upgrades from oversold Y, reaccommodation from delayed or cancelled flights (both CX and other carriers). Points upgrades at check-in. Fare paying J passengers who have simply not allocated their seats when you’ve viewed the seat map. CX staff on business travel. The list goes on. I’m led to believe that CX employees are under strict instructions that they must not, under any circumstances, make it apparent to any other passenger that they’re on ID tickets. I’m told that disciplinary action may occur if they do make it apparent. I’m also told that the discount is off published fares and not market fares which often means ID90 in J can be very expensive and not affordable for the “lowest rank of new-recruits”. I think the bottom line is that you pay for one seat and you get one seat – that’s why I don’t get upset when the unpublished DM benefit of seatblock beside me doesn’t materialize. I paid for one seat, not two.
