I'll let those who are much smarter on the earning of miles address that part of the question.

I had no problem booking 5 people on the same CX flight last December (sadly we had to cancel) and for this coming December. Seats are all in J on the outbound and the return has us in a mixture of F and J.

I booked them using AA miles. You should have no problem booking on 2 flights.
